Announcing the BoCo Youth Climate Challenge, a Competition for Middle and High School Students in Boulder County

Green PowerHow can we shift attitude and behaviors and unite the Boulder community to create a more just, sustainable, and climate friendly future?  Announcing the BoCo Youth Climate Challenge, a competition for middle and high school students in Boulder County, facilitated by CU’s Learn More About Climate, the Boulder Climate Culture Collaborative (C3 Boulder) and the City of Boulder.

Earlier this year, Boulder published a draft of the Boulder Climate Commitment, a document that explains how we can, and why we must, reduce carbon emissions 80% by 2050. The document is divided into three sections (energy, resources, and ecosystems), and students get to choose one of the sections and create a plan to address the topic to help cut carbon out of our fossil fueled systems. Although the Climate Commitment is written by and for the City of Boulder, we all know that climate change has no boundaries. These solutions can be applied to Louisville, Superior, Boulder, and beyond!

Students are encouraged to submit ideas for the project via this online form by Friday, February 18. Contest organizers will pair students with mentors from CU Boulder, the City of Boulder, and local businesses to help them refine their ideas. Idea submissions will be accepted after February 18, and organizers will do their best to find mentors for those students. If you are interested in having your classroom participate, please contact Katya Hafich. Winning submissions will be presented at a public event during Earth Future week, April 18-23, day and location TBD, and a total of $500 will be distributed to the grand prize winners.

The competition is part of the current community engagement process around the Boulder Climate Commitment. If you’d like a guest speaker from the City to introduce the Climate Commitment to your classroom, please email Kevin Andrews.

Find the competition guidelines on the C3 Boulder website.
